While attending medical school, Dr. Pettersen focused on women's health and obstetrics. She was actively involved in the development of the institution and served as Student Association President. During her residency, she supervised students, lectured throughout the community, and completed specialty rotations at Nix Hospital in San Antonio, Texas, where she worked in wound care utilizing Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy. She also completed a specialty rotation in Jamaica, participating in maternal healthcare and childbirth services.
